Parent Mentor
RESPONSIBLE TO:
Director of Special Education
JOB CLASSIFICATION:
Classified Employee-180 days (20 hours per week) - Flexible work hours required. Some mandatory travel required. Minimal evening, weekend, and summer responsibilities required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
To nurture communication among parents and educators, ultimately leading to greater parental involvement and success for students with disabilities.
Must demonstrate prompt and regular attendance.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Promote parent support groups and parent involvement initiatives.
- Serve on school, district and state committees promoting parent involvement.
- Attend school-level and community events and public forums.
- Participate in GaDOE Parent Mentor functions and trainings.
- Help parents navigate the special education process.
- Provide and/or coordinate trainings (i.e., IDEIA, No Child Left Behind, Transition, IEP safeguards, SSI, Medicaid, Person-centered planning, etc.)
- Respond to phone calls and parent correspondence.
- Help parents find appropriate community resources
- Help parents understand and cope with their child’s disability
- Support educators in collaborative home/school relationships (preschool through post-school)
- Support parent and teacher use of assistive technology and resources (lending library).
- Research parent resources and support postings on DSS School Fusion website.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
High school diploma with some college preferred
Experience:
Parent of a child with a disability
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:
Ability to communicate in multiple modalities preferred (PECS, ASL, bilingual)
Professional appearance and calm demeanor
Ability to stand and speak before a crowd
Ability to offer non-judgmental advice
Knowledge of various disabilities
Knowledge of the MariettaCity school system
Ability to accomplish goals with minimal direct supervision
Exceptional organizational and record keeping skills
Excellent communication skills (speaking, writing, listening)
Working knowledge of the internet and Microsoft platforms
Understanding of laws related to students with disabilities
Knowledge of local and GaDOE contacts and resources
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently sitting and standing. The employee may occasionally bend or twist at the neck and back while performing the duties of this job. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read typewritten material.
Work Environment:
The noise level in the work environment is at times loud. The employee is frequently required to interact with the public and other staff.
