Responsible To:

     Principal and Special Education Teacher(s) 

 

 

Essential Functions:

Helps to provide appropriate academic, behavior, social, emotional, and vocational learning opportunities for students with disabilities (SWDs) assigned to teacher caseloads. Helps to assess and document student progress.

 

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance and adheres to established work schedules.
  2. Assists with classroom management and data collection, including collections for student information, student record, FTE and other state database counts.
  3. Assists teachers by providing one-on-one support for individual students as required.
  4. Teaches (under direct supervision) or assists students in proper toileting skills, eating skills, physical/occupational therapy skills, leisure and recreation, medical management and other daily living skills.
  5. Prepares learning materials to meet individual learning styles – study guides, modified worksheets, taped reading assignments, etc.
  6. Aids in the delivery of specialized assessment and instruction for students with disabilities (or at risk) and provides documentation of students’ progress on targeted goals and objectives.
  7. Assists teachers by working on individual goals and objectives as determined by students’ IEPs.
  8. Corrects class work and homework; documenting and reporting areas of strength and weakness.
  9. Works collaboratively in co-teaching classrooms by reinforcing instruction, using behavioral supports and interventions and implementing appropriate accommodations and modifications.
  10. Assists in the supervision of students on field trips and other off-campus sites as needed.
  11. Maintains the confidentiality of information regarding students and their program.
  12. Provides clerical support (word processing, copying, filing, etc.) to education administration and staff to support the needs of students with disabilities.
  13. Serves on school committees, attends meetings and assists with school functions such as Child Find, screenings, intakes, and assessments as requested by Director of Special Education.
  14. Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Director of Special Education or Principal.

Qualifications:

Education/Testing:

  • Qualified applicants must meet one of these criteria and provide documentation confirming: 1) Completion of 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours of postsecondary coursework through an accredited school; or 2) Completion of an Associate's Degree through an accredited school; or 3) Have a passing score on the Parapro Assessment acceptable in Georgia.

Experience:

  • The successful candidate will have experience working with students who display characteristics associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or other developmental delays.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently sitting and standing near students with disabilities.  The employee may occasionally bend or twist at the neck and back while performing the duties of this job The employee may occasionally lift up to 90 pounds to assist students in toileting, positioning or to assist students with extreme behaviors. The employee may also be required to assist students in wheelchairs and to manipulate equipment such as standers, walkers, etc. Specific vision abilities include the ability to read typewritten material and computer screens.

 

Work Environment:

The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud. The employee is frequently required to interact with the public and other staff. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being and work out-put of students.
