POSITION TITLE:

School Bus Driver

 

RESPONSIBLE TO:

Field Safety Coordinator, SPED Supervisor, Assistant Director and the Director of Transportation

 

JOB CLASSIFICATION:

Classified. 180-day Employee at Will

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Must pass DOE annual physical, must be willing to submit to drug and alcohol testing as may be required by law, and must qualify for or possess a valid Georgia CDL license with required passenger (P) and school bus driver (S) endorsements

 

The driver must submit to a local and national criminal background check prior to being hired. Must submit to and show negative results on drug and/or alcohol test to be given on a pre-employment, random, post-accident and/or reasonable suspicion basis in accordance with federal law and district policy. Must register in the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse. Must hold or pass the DOE Bus Driver training program and maintain certification. Must report any criminal violations or charges to their supervisor prior to their next duty assignment.

 

Must be able, in the event of an emergency evacuation, to lift, carry, or drag 40 pounds of weight comfortably.

 

Bus driver must provide safe and efficient transportation of Marietta City School’s students during regular, special and extended transportation operations.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Must be able to safely and efficiently operate in accordance with Georgia law every type and style of bus within the MCS fleet, used to transport students to and from school and school sanctioned events on a daily basis
  2. Must demonstrate prompt and outstanding attendance
  3. Must be able to communicate effectively with students, parents, transportation staff and school staff
  4. Provides professional student management of students utilizing school bus transportation on a daily basis
  5. Looks out for scenes and situations that may pose a danger to MCS students being transported to and from school
  6. Must adhere to all state and local traffic laws while operating a school bus.  Also, drivers will be required to provide permission for periodic inquiries to their Motor Vehicle Records and the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse
  7. Must know and adhere to all department operating policy and procedures to include route assignment, operation and reporting procedures
  8. Must conduct a mechanical safety pre-trip inspection prior to each bus route, and a post-trip inspection upon completion of each route. Malfunctioning equipment and cosmetic issues must be reported in writing for repair or replacement
  9. Must clean and maintain bus equipment daily to ensure the safe, sanitized, and professional operation of school bus at all times
  10. Drivers must report via 2-way radio all accidents and incidents at the time of their occurrence to the dispatch office or supervisor call number
  11. Drivers are required to maintain order on their bus and to report, through the Safe Rider Program, habitual or serious infractions to school or department administration using proper reporting procedures and forms
  12. Must attend mandatory annual state safety meeting and other scheduled department training as required
  13. Must be in uniform and present an appropriate professional appearance and demeanor while working with students, parents, school officials and the general public at large
  14. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:  

Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.

 

Experience:

Drivers must have a minimum of twenty-four hours of initial training of which at least twelve hours must be classroom training, six hours driving without students and six hours driving with students. (Reference Georgia School Bus Driver Training Manual). All training will be completed under the observation of a qualified DOE (Department of Education) trainer/driver. Prior to driving with students onboard, all driver candidates will be required to ride with an experienced driver to observe bus operations and student management techniques on a minimum of two routes. Applicant’s already possessing school bus driving experience with a valid CDL license with required endorsements cited above will be evaluated by a qualified DOE trainer/driver. Applicants with school bus driving experience and a current CDL license with required endorsements may be released to drive at the discretion of the DOE Trainer/Driver after evaluation of driving skills and verified completion of DOE requirements.

 

Skills, Knowledge and Performance Requirements: 

  • Must possess the ability to learn how to read maps, maintain schedules, collect data and write reports
  • Must be able to read and understand written policy and procedure
  • Will be expected to adhere to specific and general operating and management policy and procedure as periodically presented during a given school year
  • Must be able to pass performance based re-occurring training necessary to maintain sound driving skills as required by the Director of Transportation
