ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The part-time nurse supports school nursing program of Marietta City Schools during the absence of an employee. Nursing is a specialized practice of professional services that advances the well-being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students. To that end, school nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health, safety and wellness; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy and learning.       

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance.
  2. Presents professional and well-groomed appearance according to District Dress Code.
  3. Communicates and collaborates with school personnel, nursing administration, students and families in a professional manner and with appropriate frequency about school health issues.
  4. Reviews and remains abreast of current developments, literature and technical source information to maintain proficiency related to job responsibilities and student needs.
  5. Performs on-going evaluation of treatment programs and adapts programs as necessary to maximize results.
  6. Administers nursing services in accordance with the health care plan as stated in the individual education plan and as ordered by physician.
  7. Provides privacy and a caring environment; displays and models respect towards students and others; serves as a student advocate and establishes and communicates clear behavior expectation in the clinic to students and staff.
  8. Recommends and advises schools and teachers regarding appropriate sanitary procedures for specific students.
  9. Monitors restrictive diets as directed by physician.
  10. Lifts, positions, transfers and performs other special duties using lumbar belts as required to meet the needs of moderately intellectually disabled, severely and profoundly intellectually disabled, and orthopedically impaired students.
  11. Functions as a health resource and liaison among students and staff concerning health promotion and wellness.
  12. Adheres to District Administrative Rules; uses a distinct clinical knowledge base for decision making in nursing practice; delivers nursing services consistent with Georgia Board of Nursing rules and regulations; nursing procedures are efficient, safe, and effective; maintains accurate documentation of clinic services, including emergency situations; demonstrates ethical and professional behavior, including maintenance of confidentiality at all times.
  13. Performs and records medication counts, administers and documents medications to students according to approved clinic policies, procedures, protocols and written physician directions to include injectable medications and emergency medication with appropriate documented records.
  14. Maintains a clean, orderly clinic to ensure a safe physical environment including locked medication cabinets, practicing standard precautions at all times, and maintaining sharps containers in appropriate locations; maintains adequate clinic supplies.
  15. Provides limited, immediate short-term care to students with an injury or illness until parents or designated persons can be notified and assume responsibility for the sick or injured student. These physical requirements include, but are not limited to:
    • the ability to timely respond and attend to emergency situations that may occur throughout the facility;
    • the ability to perform lifting, supporting and movement of students.
  16. Performs all nursing actions in accordance with the scope of practice of the Georgia Board of Nursing and Marietta City Schools policies and procedures.
  17. Charts all student interactions.
  18. Immediately refers chronic health conditions requiring medical procedures performed by a special needs nurse, as ordered by a physician, to the Lead Nurse. The Lead Nurse will initiate the process of establishing a plan of care.
  19. Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Special Services, Principal, and/or Nursing Coordinator.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education

Bachelor’s Degree preferred

 

Certification/License

Valid RN licensure in the State of Georgia preferred or LPN licensure in the State of Georgia

Certification in CPR/AED, preferred

Certification in American Red Cross Standard First Aid, preferred
