QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:

 

Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, Reading, or a related field - Required

Eligible to hold a Georgia Teaching Certification

 

Experience:

 

 Minimum 3 years of classroom teaching experience – Required 

 Training in at least one structured literacy program:

      School-based teacher training and coaching experience – Preferred

 

JOB SUMMARY:

 

The Director of Science of Reading (SoR) leads the district-wide implementation of SoR practices from kindergarten to Grade 12. Focusing on fostering literacy excellence, the SoR Director ensures consistency of SoR pedagogy and practices across all classrooms and school leadership teams, driving student achievement and promoting a culture of lifelong learning. Additionally, the SoR Director provides essential instructional support through coaching and facilitating professional development for all levels to enhance teacher capacity and ensure fidelity in SoR implementation throughout the district.  

 

 MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Lead ongoing implementation of SoR practices in elementary schools, ensuring responsiveness to areas of improvement.
  2. Collaborate closely with the Executive Director of Academics to integrate the adopted curriculum and implement the district literacy plan.
  3. Design, implement, and lead the middle and high school SoR plan, focusing on literacy development strategies tailored to the needs.
  4. Develop a facilitator schedule customized to teacher and student needs across schools.
  5. Provide professional development, feedback, and an accountability model for SoR facilitators and instructional coaches as needed.
  6. Work collaboratively with school-based leadership staff to identify gaps in implementation.
  7. Lead district-wide professional development and inter-school collaboration for reading specialists.
  8. Monitor and support the school-based scheduling of reading specialists to maximize effectiveness.
  9. Ensure consistency of SoR pedagogy and practice across all coaching staff.
  10. Design and implement SoR training for new teachers and develop an accountability model for completing required training.
  11. Lead integration of SoR alignment between school and district office-based staff, including EIP, ESOL, MTSS, and special education teachers.
  12. Collaborate with external partners as needed to modify existing online modules to meet the learning needs of MCS staff.
  13. Secure additional resources to support school and district staff professional learning needs for SoR practices and/or pedagogy.
  14. Facilitate the contract and collaboration with the University of Georgia research team to implement appropriate action items and recommendations, which include the classroom walkthrough protocol.
  15. Lead the development and implementation of formative assessment strategies and collaborate with school and central office staff to identify data-driven areas of strength, growth, and gaps.
