Technician II

 

RESPONSIBLE TO:

Technician I, Assistant Director of Fleet, and the Director of Transportation

 

JOB CLASSIFICATION:

Classified.  239-day Employee at Will

FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The vehicle technician works under the direct supervision of the Technician I and the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Fleet and the Director of Transportation.  They are responsible for repair and upkeep of all vehicles, under the jurisdiction of the Transportation Department.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Must demonstrate prompt and regular attendance.
  2. Determine general condition of vehicles, analyzes malfunctions of diesel or gasoline engines by visual or auditory examination or by testing equipment.
  3. Operates engine to locate external damage, loose or excessively worn parts or accessories.                            
  4. Checks fuel and cooling system for cleanliness and general condition.
  5. Fuels all system owned vehicles and maintains daily list of disbursal of fuel and oil consumption.
  6. Inspects batteries by testing with hydrometer, checks amount of corrosion, and conditions of terminals.
  7. Checks oil and water levels of all system vehicles on a regular basis.
  8. Checks fan belts and cooling system hoses for wear and replacements.
  9. Checks and inspects the fuel tanks for leakage on a weekly basis recording measurements on the proper forms.
  10. Breaks down and mounts tires on an as needed basis at the direction of the Technician I.
  11. Is responsible for the cleanliness and upkeep of the fuel dispersal site (gas and diesel fuel pumps) and general area.
  12. Is responsible for the cleanliness and upkeep of the work bays under the supervision of the Technician I.
  13. Maintains an overall clean, safe work environment.
  14. Road tests equipment at the direction of the Technician I.
  15. Maintains favorable employee relations.
  16. Maintains and is responsible for maintenance and security of assigned equipment and tools.                                        
  17. Complies with any reasonable oral or written directive(s) from the Technician I, Assistant Director of Fleet, Director of Transportation or other appropriate system level administrator.                                                                                          

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:

Graduation from high school or equivalent.

 

Experience:

Three (3) years successful experience as a mechanic working on trucks or buses. NIASE certification preferred.

 

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of mechanics; ability to keep suitable records of job performance; possess a valid drivers license; ability to follow written and oral instructions (map reading and learning locations of schools in the city); familiarize himself with accounting.
